Snowflakes and STEM: Hands-On Winter Learning Projects

Engage Young Minds with Winter-Themed STEM Activities at EastGate Early Learning Academy

Winter is the perfect season to spark curiosity and creativity in young learners. 1. Exploring the Geometry of Snowflakes


Objective: Introduce children to symmetry and patterns while exploring the unique beauty of snowflakes.


Activity:


Materials Needed: Paper, scissors, and markers.


Steps:

  1. Fold a piece of paper into a triangle several times.
  2. Let children cut small shapes along the edges.
  3. Unfold to reveal their snowflake, and discuss how real snowflakes have six-sided symmetry.


STEM Connection: Talk about how snowflakes form in nature, with water molecules aligning in a hexagonal pattern as they freeze. This is an excellent way to connect art and science.



2. Creating Ice Sculptures


Objective: Explore the properties of water and ice while fostering creativity.


Activity:


Materials Needed: Small plastic containers, water, food coloring, salt, and string or ribbon.


Steps:

  1. Fill containers with water and add a few drops of food coloring.
  2. Freeze the water overnight.
  3. Pop out the ice shapes and stack them to build sculptures, using salt to "glue" them together.
  4. For added fun, suspend them outside on a string as frozen art!


STEM Connection: Discuss the freezing point of water and how salt lowers it, causing the ice to melt slightly and refreeze when connecting the pieces.



3. Measuring Temperature Changes


Objective: Teach children about temperature and its effect on various materials.


Activity:


Materials Needed: Thermometer, cups, warm water, cold water, ice cubes, and a timer.


Steps:

  1. Place ice cubes in a cup of water and record the initial temperature.
  2. Observe and record how the temperature changes every two minutes as the ice melts.
  3. Compare this to a cup of warm water cooling to room temperature.


STEM Connection: Help children understand how heat transfers between objects and the environment, introducing basic concepts of thermodynamics.
